Paramount+ streaming service released the latest Star Trek film, Part 31A few weeks ago for a very unbelievable review. While Rotten Tomatoes is clearly not the end, all barometers of how the media is accepted, the film is currently sitting (at this time of writing) by 17%, lower even than Star Trek: Nemesis And Star Trek V: Last border.
For more details, post this blog No About the film, despite having “Part 31” in its name. I have not seen the film, and the possibility will not, for reasons that will be clear here soon. Instead, I want to explore draft Part 31, why I think it ruins the ideals that underlie Star Trek, and why it’s important maybe more than we think.
I have extraordinary Jerry Goldsmith Star Trek: The Motion Picture Score (where we first got the theme which will eventually become The next generation Theme) Playing on my headphone, so let’s do this.
What is Section 31?
First, if there is doubt, let me say that I really love me a few Star Trek: Deep Space Ninewhere the idea of section 31 was originally established. Some of the best star tracks and acting Once comes from the seven seasons of television. Garak may be my favorite Star Trek character of all time, played by Andrew Robinson who is unmatched. The slow details of the Avery Brooks author in “Far Beyond the Stars” stand out as one of the best shows I have ever seen, Star Trek or vice versa.
DS9 put aside the episodic nature of TNG supports the long arc that occurs for several episodes, or even a few seasons. It was also not afraid to show the federation that faced its own extinction in the hands of Dominion, and the arising despair, as in the episode “The Pale Moonlight.” It did not try to romantle the war. On the contrary. Although of course it is a darker and more painful Star Trek, even the most terrible, it is not nihilistic. There is always hope, even if that, as Gandalf calls it, the hope of a fool.
In this environment we first met the 31 section, super-rahasia wing from the federation intelligence service, was first introduced at 6Th Episode of the season, “Inquisition.” At the end of this episode, we know that part 31 has existed since the establishment of the federation.

We then met with the face of part 31, Luther Sloan (played by William Sadler), once again at “Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges,” where Operation section 31 frame an innocent Romulant Senator, who was a strong supporter of the federation/romulant cooperative effort, as a examiner for the purpose, which was likely to be executed for the river that should be.
Finally, in “extreme actions,” revealed that section 31 has engineered a virus to kill changes in efforts to eradicate the founders of Dominion. Sloan died in this episode, allows the character to stop this genocide before it starts, but implied that there are so many operations carried out by section 31 so that no one has instructions about, and with his death, the possibility will never.

Damage report
So, we have kidnapping, murder, murder, and genocide in and out. If it looks like things that are very non-existent, even the characters in the event are surprised by the actions of part 31. Odo even commented, “The federation claims tactics to hate section 31, but when they need dirty jobs, they look in the other way. This is a neat small setting, right? “
Although there is a line that says that section 31 is not affiliated with starfleet or federation, they are still part of the federation founder charter, so maybe they have existed from the beginning of doing some things that are really terrible right behind the scenes.

This is framed by Sadler’s character as part of 31 doing dirty work so that the federation can sleep soundly at night, protecting people from the virtues of external threats who do not share their high-minded ideals.
Effectively, it means that humanity has never been completely changed. Apart from all the great speeches by Kirk and Picard about how human beings are able to grow out of childhood in post-class society and become something bigger, something more noble than where we are now, it’s really just an illusion. During this time, section 31 has been silent -cleaning the path for the federation to appear as an enlightened society, but it never really happened. The utopian idea of federation was a lie.

For my part, underestimating such a federation really takes out hearts from the Star Trek. I think the idea of section 31 actually did significant damage to the overall intellectual property. The three episodes of DS9 really opened the Pandora box.
Unfortunately, the Kurtzman era from Star Trek seems to be unable to get enough from section 31. This film is intended to be the whole series, but Michelle Yeoh won a very decent Oscar, so that the project is limited in the scope for a long film feature. There is no shade to the actor or crew, but I hope so far and section 31 can retire for now.
Jason Bourne’s effect
Allow me a short side of James Bond. So, when Daniel Craig took over the role 007 Casino Royaleit is clear that they have reduced many things from the last entry of Pierce Brosnan DEAD OT OTHER DAY. This bond has a little way of eye gadgets or deceiving vehicles. Although it is not appropriate without humor, there is no pleasure and pleasure that comes from many other installments in the franchise. The whole tone and presentation of the story feels much more like the film Jason Bourne with a more gitrier approach, more down to earth.

The problem is that Bond has a unique type of formula, something that is not true -actually we get elsewhere. Of course, Austin Powers, parodied the formula to the level level, but it was able to do it because the Bond formula was very successful and recognized, after being withdrawn in the audience for 40 years when running Craig as the main eye. Timothy Dalton License to kill Is a famous person departing from the formula, and that shows. Bonds are only in the journey of revenge against the figure of a large drug cartel. Until then, there is a Bond film every two or three years since the original NO in 1961. License to killIt was six years before Brosnan brought a bond back in 1995 Goldeneyewho looked back to the proven formula.
Jason Bourne is intended to stand differently from Bond, as something in the same genre but basically different. If the audience wants a harder look in the spy game, they already have it with the film Jason Bourne and other series like them. Bond, on the other hand, is a unique mixture that we did not get elsewhere. By making bonds more like Bourne, we lose the uniqueness of the franchise. After that, it feels like the other eye film series.

What does that have to do with Star Trek? Simple, we don’t get much utopian science fiction. If you want a Dystopian Sci-Fi, you are really spoiled with a choice. There are many out there. When you make a nilistic and hypocritical star track, you lose things that distinguish star tracks and make it a long and iconic franchise.
Why is it important
Okay, so if it’s only a TV show and a series of films, why is there anything important? Who cares besides a group of fanboy? Well, think about the number of people over the years who have become doctors, scientists, engineers, or a number of other careers, who have made a real contribution to these fields because Star Trek shows them a future vision of a future, even inspiring.

Look, I understand – we don’t see the future in the same way again. When I was a child, there was still a sense of optimism for the future. Now, more often than not, the future is something we fear. It can be said that the darker and less idealistic star track is what is interesting for modern audiences, especially the younger generation who may not have many things to look forward to because the problems that most influence them are mostly ignored or worse.
The argument of my counter for that is that The gloomy time is when we need more inspirational fiction than before. Remember, Tos came out during the Cold War, when World War II was still towering in public awareness, only three years after the Cuban missile crisis was almost close, and during the peak of the civil rights movement.

Kirk’s Company Show us that we can finally override all our differences and work harmoniously. It was not a mistake that there were Russian navigators and Japanese muddy. Nichelle Nichols who is late is famous for telling the story of how he wants to get out of the show to pursue his stage career, but is discussed by Martin Luther King, Jr. I invite you to watch it you haven’t seen it yet. It’s beautiful. In it, he mentioned that Dr. King will let his children stay through their bedtime to watch the show.
My parents did the same thing for me, both of whom were big fans. The Tos episode in syndications will appear late at night, but I am allowed to stay up late to watch them. I have to compare it with the fact that I will not allow my young son to be completely seeing a modern Star Trek at all, given the portrayal of torture and explicit or hackless violence (all things Icheb are on. Picard Appear to mind), not to say anything about the lack of clear moral messages and sad and desperate tones.

I know that it might seem grandiose, even hubritistic, to say, but I think the world needs something like a star track to show us that all hopes are not lost, that things can be better – that We can be better. So, when I say that section 31 erodes all of that, and makes star tracks the same as seeing other grimdark in the future, it has further range of consequences rather than being a mere show.
Last thought
In the vision of Gene Roddenberry about Star Trek, we humans finally find our humanity, and build society based on angels that are better than our nature. Star Trek: Next Generation continue and maintain that vision. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Doing also, at first, but in the end introduced the concept that, for me, was fully contrary to everything until then. Because it’s not really touched Voyager or CompanyThe concept of section 31 may still be contained in several episodes of DS9.
However, the current Star Trek harvest, has chosen to embrace the 31 part in almost every turn, which culminates with the Epolymous film. However, I will give credit to Star Trek: Strange New World To try to turn back a little optimism which in my opinion is very important, but even it has struggled to be consistent in the calculation when the captain Pike is likely to be destined for defects in accidents that he knows in his future. Also, the episode of “Lift Us Up Where suffering cannot reach” is an epic downer so it really makes me stop watching the show.
So, this is my sincere hope that Star Trek can be correct and stay away from section 31 focus on moving forward and back to show us our future will actually be want to For life, instead of being, maybe accidentally, franchise deconstructionist. In essence, I always believe that scientific fiction is one of the most certain ways to inspire ourselves as humans, to give us something that must be reached on the distant horizons, and the Star Trek is on the front lines of the border. It will be very embarrassing losing it.
Thank you for reading, I hope you are all peace and long life.
