Professional audio manufacturer from Germany, Neumann, has officially brought back one of the most iconic microphones in the history of the recording industry, the M 50 V. This legendary tube microphone was introduced as the latest version of the Neumann M 50, which for decades has been known for shaping the sound characteristics of orchestral recordings, classical music, and world-class film scoring.
The early generation M 50 was first launched in 1951 and became the gold standard in orchestral recording, especially through the Decca Tree technique which is still widely used today. With the M 50 V, Neumann brings this legendary sonic character into the modern production era with various technical improvements without losing its original identity.
Neumann retained the M 50’s original acoustic design, including a small-diaphragm omni capsule housed within a 40-millimeter diameter sphere. However, on the M 50 V, Neumann uses a titanium diaphragm to increase stability, durability and consistent performance over long-term use.
This combination produces vivid sound imaging, precise transient response, and powerful bass character—characteristics that have made the M 50 a legend in the world of professional recording.
From the electronics side, the M 50 V adopts an original circuit design combined with modern ultra-low-noise subminiature tubes and RF interference-resistant connectors. This system is designed to face the challenges of today’s increasingly complex studio environment.
Neumann emphasized that the M 50 V is not a mass product. Each unit is handmade in Germany by a dedicated service and quality control team, with production quantities intentionally limited to maintain the highest quality standards.
“Our goal was to honor the historical heritage of the M 50 while meeting modern recording demands,” said Jorma Marquardt, Neumann Portfolio Manager. According to him, the M 50 V is designed as an ideal solution for recording orchestras, film music, and stereo, surround and immersive audio formats.
The same thing was conveyed by Medzid Veseli, Head of Neumann Service and Quality Control. He calls the M 50 V a part of recording history that is being brought back to life with full dedication. “Every component is assembled and inspected with high precision to deliver the signature Neumann sound that audio professionals trust,” he said.
For more than seven decades, the Neumann M 50 has been the foundation of legendary recordings. In the 1950s, this microphone became the main choice of Decca Records engineers in developing the Decca Tree technique for orchestral stereo recording.
Since then, the M 50 has been widely used in classical music recordings, concerts, and film scoring at various world-renowned studios, including Hollywood. Not only limited to classical music, the M 50 is also often used in pop and jazz recordings as a room microphone for drums, brass sections and ensembles.
The M 50 V set is offered as a complete package that includes the M 50 V microphone with titanium capsule, NM V power supply unit with automatic voltage adaptation, iconic yoke mount with mechanical decoupling system, RF-resistant cables and connectors, as well as a premium case that is also handmade in Germany. For orders of two or more units, Neumann includes a matching process between microphones.
The Neumann M 50 V is now in limited production and can be ordered via the pre-order system. Delivery is scheduled to start February 2026 for European markets, North America and a number of countries in the Asia Pacific region.
