Semarang – Committed to preserving the environment and reducing carbon emissions, PT Pertamina (Persero) through the Pertamina Foundation is implementing a reforestation program on 11-12 December 2025, commemorating Pertamina’s 68th anniversary.
Collaborating with three universities, namely Diponegoro University (UNDIP), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Pertamina Foundation planted hundreds of thousands of trees on hundreds of hectares of land as a concrete step to maintain ecosystem resilience, increase green cover, and strengthen community empowerment around forest areas.
Starting from a program to restore the upstream watershed (DAS) ecosystem, especially the Babon Watershed and Citarum Watershed, through joint planting with UNDIP and ITB. Meanwhile, collaboration with UGM is focused on forest rehabilitation and vegetation restoration in the Gunungkidul karst area, Special Region of Yogyakarta.
Independent Commissioner of PT Pertamina (Persero) Condro Kirono, said that this reforestation step is very urgent in the midst of increasing flood disasters and ecosystem damage in various regions.
“Trees planted are a gift for future generations and must be cared for together so that they can provide ecological and economic benefits to the community for the present and future generations,” said Condro, Thursday (11/12).
A total of 129,552 trees were planted at KHDTK Wanadipa UNDIP and KHDTK Gunung Geulis ITB in an area of more than 105 hectares. Tree planting is carried out using a multistory agroforestry approach which combines ecological and economic functions, so that forest areas not only recover but are also productive for forest farmer groups and women farmer groups.
President Director of the Pertamina Foundation, Agus Mashud S. Asngari, emphasized that reforestation based on community empowerment around forest areas is the main focus of the Sustainable Forest program.
“Greening is the most concrete effort to maintain the sustainability of the earth. Through planned tree planting, you not only increase green cover, but also strengthen environmental quality, increase ecosystem resilience, and open up economic opportunities for the community. We are committed to ensuring that every tree planted today becomes a valuable legacy for the community,” said Agus.
Located at KHDTK Wanadipa UNDIP, East Ungaran, Pertamina Foundation planted 48,000 trees on 48 hectares of land. UNDIP Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, SE, M.Sc., said that this planting is a long-term effort to maintain the balance of the upstream ecosystem of the Babon Watershed.
“This is not just a greening movement, but an effort to protect the upstream Babon watershed so that flooding in downstream areas can be reduced. With the involvement of farmer groups, we hope that this area will grow into an important lung for Central Java as well as a natural laboratory for future generations,” he said.
Meanwhile at KHDTK Gunung Geulis ITB, Sumedang, the Pertamina Foundation planted 81,552 trees in an area of 57.51 hectares as part of the upstream conservation of the Citarum watershed. The plants used include puspa, rasamala, durian, avocado, to coffee and cocoa.
Dean of the ITB School of Life Sciences and Technology, Dr. Indra Wibowo, S.Sc., M.Sc., emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration in maintaining forest ecosystems.
“This collaboration is not just about planting trees, but planting the future. Upstream watershed restoration must go hand in hand with community empowerment. Pertamina’s support strengthens the capacity of farmer groups and women farmer groups so that the benefits are sustainable,” he said.
Apart from focusing on reforesting watershed land, Pertamina Foundation is collaborating with Gadjah Mada University (UGM). expanding the reforestation program by planting 300,000 trees in an area of 534 hectares in the Gunungkidul area, Yogyakarta.
Planting will be carried out in the Yogyakarta Forest Management Unit (KPH) area which is divided into 5 (five) Forest Area (BDH) areas, such as BDH Paliyan, BDH Karangmojo, BDH Panggang, BDH Playen, and BDH Kulonprogo–Bantul.
Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Ir. Sigit Sunarta, S.Hut., MP, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU hopes that this synergy will be able to raise environmental awareness while opening up opportunities for better welfare for residents around forest areas.
“Through this synergy, we strengthen our joint commitment to restore critical land in a planned, measured and sustainable manner,” he said.
This greening program is an important part of Pertamina’s implementation of Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) which is able to support the Tridharma of Higher Education, Government Astacita, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.
